    Description

These were a fun little find, tucked away in a back corner of a local antique mall that was having a moving sale.  They were labeled as Steamship fans and I didn't think much more about them, just thought they were cute.  Actually, I envisioned them as part of a spring time flower bouquet, mantel or shelf display.  They have a perky appearance poking out of vintage holders.  They also would be really neat to use as part of a Graduation or Retirement Celebration Event to commemorate traveling on to the next chapter in life!
But then I did my research and found these to be quite collectible.  They were items given to steamship passengers for their comfort and as travel mementos.  The N.Y.K.  Line has 152 vessels, 886 Gross Tons and Regular Service from Japan to Europe, America, Australia, India, China and all Other parts of the world.  Their tag line was The Sun Never Sets on the N.Y.K. Flag.  These lines operated in the early 1900s.  How cool!
The fans are smaller profile with variegated tan backgrounds.  The front has a cute picture of a pink outline of a house with a black roof and two trees and a large black bird announcing the morning on top of the house.  Underneath in pink cursive is N.Y.K. Line.  Some wispy pink clouds complete the picture.  They have simple thin bamboo sticks.
Amazingly, the fans are not ripped or torn and the sticks are still firmly attached to the paddles.  They do have quite a lot of age staining to the paper itself.  I think most of it was from water damage.  There is a light coating of glitter on the top of each.
