  • Condition: Pieces are in great condition, absolutely amazing for ~50 year old chessmen. The board is much-much older, yet is in good condition with both hooks working perfectly, however the heavy-duty lacquer has traces of time and use on it.

    Description

    Some things about this big vintage Soviet chess set:
    • The board and chessmen come from different times: the board is 1940s and the figures are 1970s,
    • Board dimensions are 60x60x2.5 cm, its weight is 3 kg,
    • The board has both hooks working perfectly, but the lacquer on top has traces of time and use. This can be dealt with by removing the old lacquer and covering the board with new layer, if you wish to get rid of the vintage look,
    • Chessmen are in absolutely amazing condition for ~50 year old pieces and have no defects at all,
    • King’s height is 10.2 cm, base diameter is 3.5 cm, weight is 16 g,
    • Queen’s height is 9.5 cm, base diameter is 3.5, weight is 13 g,
    • Pawn’s height is 5.7 cm, base diameter is 3 cm, weight is 6 g,
    • Knights are hand carved by inmates, which was a common practice during the USSR era,
    • This set used to belong to a prominent Soviet Kazakh academician in the 50s, but the old pieces were gifted to his friend and in the 70s his son acquired new pieces for this huge board. For a long time they were stored separately.
